Fossils BPRVTHS
Fossil Flashcards for BP freshmen
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Evolution | change in species over time |
| extinction | a species that has completely died out |
| mass extinction | much extinction at the same time |
| sediment | small pieces of rock, shell or other material that are broken down over time |
| sedimentary rock | sediments that become rock over time |
| petrification | process by which once living material is replaced by minerals, turning it to stone |
| fossil | evidence of a once living thing |
| mold | empty space left in a rock after an organism has decayed |
| cast | filled-in mold that has the shape of the original organism |
| imprints | thin objects, like leaves and feathers, leave imprints in the mud. When the mud hardens the imprints are preserved as fossils |
| freezing | whole organism becomes frozen in ice |
| amber | tree resin traps organisms, the resin hardens to form amber |
| trace fossils | evidence of animal activities: tracks, trails, footprints, and burrows |
| micro fossils | fossils of single-celled organisms |
| Law of Superposition | states that in undisturbed sedimentary rocks, each layer is older than the one above it and younger than the one under it |
| index fossil | fossil of an organism that existed on earth for only a short period of time that can be used by scientists to determine the relative age of the rock |
| half-time dating | measurement of the amount of time it takes for one half of the atoms of a sample of radioactive element to decay, determines the absolute age of a fossil |
| absolute age | the precise time an event occurred |
| relative age | approximate date in which an event occurred |
| geologic time | the length of time that the earth has excised |
| four eras of geologic time | Precambrian, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, Cenozoic |
