How are mollusks divided into groups Mollusks are divided into groups based on their shells and type of muscular foot
Which mollusks have a radula and what is it Gastropods have a radula which helps them scrape away plant material so that they can eat it
Which class of mollusks are the most specialized/complex and why Cephalopods are the most complex because they have a very advanced nervous system, eyes and a closed circulatory system
What body characteristic do mollusks and worms have in common Both have soft bodies
In which group are mollusks with 2 shells bivalves
In which group are mollusks with large heads and usually no outer shell Cephalopods
List examples of gastropods Snails, slugs, conches, whelks
List examples of bivalves Clams, oysters, mussels, scallops
List examples of echinoderms Sea stars, brittle stars, sea urchins, sand dollars, sea cucumbers
List characteristics of the mollusk phylum Soft bodies, usually have a shell, mantle, organs/visceral mass, muscular foot, bilateral symmetry
List characteristics of the echinoderm phylum Tube feet/water vascular system, radial symmetry, spiny skin
What does gastropod mean Stomach foot
What does cephalopod mean Head foot
Name a gastropod that doesn’t have a shell slug
List three examples of cephalopods Octopus, squid, cuttlefish
What are the jobs of the mantle The mantle covers/protects the organs and also secretes the shell
What are three ways that mollusks are harmful destructive to wooden boats/docks; gastropods scrape plants to eat/destroy crops; many can be dangerous to eat (bivalves are filter feeders and absorb water pollutants and many gastropods are hosts to dangerous parasites)
What are ways that mollusks are helpful 1. Mollusk shells and pearls can be used in jewelry/decor 2. mollusks are eaten by many sea creatures and humans 3. bivalves are indicator species for water pollution 4. shells can be used by other organisms for shelter or as a source of calcium
What are ways that echinoderms are helpful 1. food source 2. decorations 3. keep mollusk and algae populations under control 4. recycle nutrients 5. source of medicine
