Appendicitis An inflammation (swelling) of the appendix.
Causes Appendix becomes blocked by feces, tumor, foreign object OR hypergrowth of the lymphoid tissue. This obstruction can lead to accumulation of bacteria and mucus which may cause gangrene and perforation.
S & SX: Pain shifting from periumbilical to RLQ. N & V, fever, tenderness and muscle-guarding.
DX: WBC: Increased Neutrophils. Urinalysis r/t GC conditions that mimic appendicitis.
Complications: Perforation, peritonitis & abscesses.
Management: Appendectomy. If ruptured, drain and antibiotics.
