| Appendicitis | An inflammation (swelling) of the appendix. |
| Causes | Appendix becomes blocked by feces, tumor, foreign object OR hypergrowth of the lymphoid tissue. This obstruction can lead to accumulation of bacteria and mucus which may cause gangrene and perforation. |
| S & SX: | Pain shifting from periumbilical to RLQ. N & V, fever, tenderness and muscle-guarding. |
| DX: | WBC: Increased Neutrophils. Urinalysis r/t GC conditions that mimic appendicitis. |
| Complications: | Perforation, peritonitis & abscesses. |
| Management: | Appendectomy. If ruptured, drain and antibiotics. |
