| Explain the polarity of the water molecule in relation to hydrogen bonding. | Water is a polar molecule; that is, it has a partial charge throughout. (Positive by the hydrogens, negative by the oxygen.) This enables a hydrogen bond between molecules, an attraction between the partially positively and negatively charged parts. |
| How is water a good solvent? | Water is a good solvent because it can break apart ions. The attraction between the partial charges (polarity) of water and the ions which make up most compounds break the compounds apart. (i.e. NaCl - Na+, Cl-) |
| Explain the differences between acids and bases. | Acids dissociate in water to release H+, while bases dissociate in water and release OH-. |
| What is the function of a buffer, and how does it relate to the significance of pH? | Buffers absorb extra H+ or OH- to maintain a steady pH. The pH needs to be precise for chemical reactions to occur. (Without buffers, body systems could not function.) |
