Weather/Erosion

Weathering & Erosion

QuestionAnswer
Define Weathering: The chemical and physical process that break down rock at the Earth's surface
Define Erosion: The movement of rock and mineral grains from one place to another
What are the 3 main types of weathering? mechanical, chemical, biological
What are 5 things that cause erosion? wind, water, ice, gravity, plants
Landslide: Mass movement; rock and soil slide quickly down a steep slope
Sand Dunes: Wind; a deposit of wind blown sand
Waterfall: Water; steep slopes erode rapidly from fast-flowing river
Desert Pavement: Wind; smaller sediments are blown away and remains are large and heavy
Sea Stack: Waves; waves hit rocky coast repeatedly causing erosion in rock
U-Shaped Valley: Glacier; flowing glacier scoops out a U-shaped Valley
Alluvial Fan: Water; a stream flows out of a mountain becoming wider. Water slows and sediments are deposited in Alluvial Fan
Moraine Glacier; a glacier deposits mounds of till. Moraine is made up of sand, sediment, and boulders
Mechanical Weathering: The physical break up or desintigration of rocks caused by gravity, temperature change, frost wedging, growth of plants, animal actions, abrasion (ice, water, wind, gravity)
Chemical Weathering: Chemicals present in the Earth's surface and atmosphere, can be dissolved in water: water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, living organisms, acid rain
Biological Weathering: Living organisms can break down rocks: plants, animals, bacteria, fungus, plant roots

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
