| Cholelithiasis aka gallstones | Gallstones are hard pebble like stones that form inside the gallbladder. |
| Cholecystitis | Inflammation of the gallbladder. Gallstones are lodged in the neck of the bladder. |
| Prevalance | Women over 40, multiparous, obesity, Native American, sedentary lifestyles and familial. |
| Acute S & SX | Jaundice, increased WBC, fever, pain, N & V. |
| Chronic S & SX | Fat intolerance, dyspepsia, heartburn & gaseous. |
| Complications: | Pancreatitis, cholangititis, biliary cirrhosis, fistulas and ruptured gallbladder. |
| DX: | Ultrasound most common tool used to find stones. Endoscopic retrograde used to visualize the gallbladder systems. |
| Other DX: | IV cholangiogram; radiography IV instilled percutaneously directly into the bilary tree. Liver function tests. WBC counts. Serum Bilirubin. |
| Conservative Therapy | IV fluids, NPO with NG tube, low fat diet, antimetics, analgesics, antibiotics, anticholingerics & fat-soluble vitamins. |
| Surgery: | Cholecystectomy: removal of the gallbladder. Laparoscopic: removal of gallbladder via laparoscopy. |
