OCR 21st Century Science

QuestionAnswer
How does your body maintain a constant internal environment? Balancing body inputs and outputs and removing waste products.
Your body has automatic control systems. What do they maintain steady levels of? Temperature and water (hydration.)
What would happen as a result of homeostasis failure? Death.
What two main external conditions can affect homeostasis? Exersize and the temperature of your surroundings.
How does strenuous exercise affect your body? Your body temperature increases and you lose water through sweat. Your body will need to get rid of the excess heat and replace the lost water.
What other two changes can affect your homeostasis? Blood oxygen levels and salt levels.
What two activities need to take caution of maintaining the correct blood oxygen level? Scuba divers and mountain climbers.
What is a type of artificial homeostasis? Incubator.
What job do receptors have? Detecting stimuli.
What job do processing centres have? Receive information and coordinate responses.
What job do effectors have? Produce response.
What is negative feedback? It works to maintain a steady state. When body conditions rise above or fall beneath a set level, the response is to reverse the direction of change.
In the negative feedback of an incubator, what part has the job as the receptor? The sensor that detects body temperature.
In the negative feedback of an incubator, what part has the job as the processing centre? The computer that sends signals to the heater.
In the negative feedback of an incubator, what part has the job of the effector? The heater.
What is an antagonistic effector? When the effectors act in opposites to one another.
What is an example of antagonistic effectors? Temperature.
Why is antagonistic effectors useful? The method is sensitive and accurate.
