Question | Answer |
---|---|
What are the 3 major characteristics of the Animal Kingdom. | Eukaryotic, Multicellular and Heterotrophic |
What is asymmetrical | no true body form or shape, No animals show asymmetry, usually found in Protist organisms. |
Radial Symmetry | Several planes can pass through the longitudinal axis giving the organism two equal halves. |
Bilateral Symmetry | Only one plane can pass through the longitudinal axis give two equal halves. |
Acoelomates | Organisms which lack a body cavity, as with the phylums Porifera, Cnidarians, and Platyhelminthes. |
Pseudocoelomates | Organisms which have a false body cavity |
Coelomates | Organisms which have a true body cavity, Phylums Annelida, Mollusca Arthropods and most of the rest of the invertebrates and vetebrates. |
Incomplete Digestive System | One in which there is only one opening. Nutrients and waste move through the same opening |
Complete Digestive System | Digestive system with two openings a mouth for nutrient materials and an anus for waste materials. |
Phylum Porifera | Only highly specialized cells, no tissues, mostly sessile ( non-moving) and have both forms of reproduction, sexual and asexual. Sponges belong to this phylum as the name means pore bearing. |
Phylum Cnidaria | Organisms in this group have stinging cells called cnidocytes. The jellyfish and freshwater hydras belong to this group. Tentacles contain the cnidocytes. |
What body form do Cnidarians have? | They have two body forms a medusa, like the jellyfish is a cup shape and a polyp, a vase shaped body with tentacles pointing upward. |
What type of symmetry do cnidarians have? | Radial Symmetry |
Phylum Platyhelminthes | Commonly called the flatworms include organisms like the tapeworm. |
What type of body plan do the platyhelminthes have? | They are aceolomates, which means they have no true body cavity. |
Phylum Nematoda | These are commonly called roundworms. Roundworms have a pseudocoelomate body plan. |
The Trichina Worm | A nematode that we can pick up from eating undercooked pork. |
Ascaris Worm | A nematode often affecting our pets, and is one of the worms we commonly treat with worm medication as a preventative. |
Phylum Annelida | Commonly called the segmented worms because their bodies have repeating units or rings that are each a different segment. |
What type of digestive system does the phylum annelida have. | Complete, two openings a mouth and an anus. |
What type of body plan does the phylum annelida have. | They are coelomates, with bilateral symmetry. |
What is cutaneous respiration. | It is respiration through the skin, like earthworms and frogs do. |
Phylum Mollusca | Contains the slugs, snails, bivalves and octopus and squids. They are coelomates, with bilateral symmetry and have 3 major classes of organisms in the phylum. |
Class Bivalvia | A class of mollusk that has two shells or valves, like the oyster, clam and scallop. |
Class Gastropoda | Includes the snails and slugs, with move on their stomachs over a slime layer. |
Class Cephalopoda | Includes the octopus and squids. |
Phylum Echinodermata | Means the spiny skinned animals, such as the sea stars, brittle stars and sand dollars. |
How do echinoderms move. | They use a water vascular system, with little tube feet called ampula that create a suction cup type system allowing them to grasp structures or objects to create movement. |
Phylum Arthropoda | Means jointed foot, which is the major characteristic for this group. This is the largest phylum of animals, including 80% of all animal organisms. |
Subphylum Crustacean | A group of Arthropods that include the crayfish, lobster and aquatic crabs. |
Subphylum Chelicerata | The chelicerates are specialized for having mouthparts modified to inject venom and eating. It includes spiders, scorpions and mites. |
Subphylum Myrapoda | The arthropod group containing centipedes and millipedes. |
This myrapod has 1 pair of legs per segment and are fast carnivorous animals | Centipedes |
This myrapod has 2 pairs of legs per segment and are herbivores. | Millipedes. |
Supphylum Hexapoda | Include all the insects which are identified by the class insectivora. |
