QuestionAnswer
Relative Age. The age of a rock or formation given relative to other rocks or formations.
Law of Superposition. A law stating that in any sequence of sediments or rocks that has not been overturned, the youngest sediments or rocks are at the top of the layers and the oldest are at the bottom.
Fault. It is a planar fracture in a volume of rock, across which there has been significant displacement along the fractures as a result of earth movement.
Intrusions The forcing of molten rock into an earlier formation.
Principle of Original Horizontality. The scientific law stating that sediments settling out from bodies of water are deposited horizontally in layers that lie parallel to the Earth's surface.
Law of Cross-cutting Relationships The principle of cross-cutting relationships states that an igneous intrusion is always younger than the rock it cuts across.
Absolute Age The numeric age of an object or event, often stated in years before present.
