Earth science chap7

Weather

QuestionAnswer
air mass a large region that has a similar temperature and humidity
barometer a tool to measure atmospheric pressure
blizzard a storm type that includes high winds and snow
current the constant movement of ocean waters
El Nino every 2-7 years, weather conditions that cause heavy rains and storms in North and South America
Global winds wind that blows steady over long distances and in the same direction, caused by the Sun heating the Earth unevenly
insolation solar energy that reaches the Earth's surface
tornado a rotating funnel-shaped cloud with high winds
weather is the condition of the troposphere at a specific time and place
troposphere a layer of gases closest to the Earth where all the weather occurs
humidity the amount of water vapor in the air
front the meeting place between two air masses
Gulf Stream carries warm water from near the equator toward the poles
cyclone any storm with low pressure that causes circular wind patterns...tornados, hurricanes, and tropicals storms
What does a weather vane measure? wind direction
What does a thermometer measure? temperature
What does a anemometer measure? wind speed
What does a barometer measure? air pressure
What are three characteristics of a Tropical climate Zone? 1. near the equator 2. receives most of the insolation from the sun 3. high temperatures and heavy parcipitation
What are three characteristics of a Temperate Climate Zone? 1. north and south of the equator 2. warm summers, and cool/cold winters 3. can get all types of participation
What are three characteristics of a Polar Climate Zone? 1. near the north and south poles 2. short summers and long winters 3. not much parcipitation
What kind of weather can be expected with a low-pressure system? warm and humid weather has lower pressure and creates warm, rainy and stormy weather
What kind of weather can be expected with a high-pressure system? cool and dry air has higher pressure and brings dry, clear weather
What causes a hurricane to form? a tropical storm turns into a hurricane when the wind speeds reach 74mph
What causes tornado winds to rotate? the winds rotates in a thunderhead and pulls up warm air creating low pressure -- as air flows in it rotates faster and faster reaching speeds up to 300mph
What creates a valley breeze? sunlight first warms mountain slopes...then the warm air rises and cool air from the valley comes up to take its place...making the valley breeze
I live near a large body of water (Lake Michigan) is my climate affected by this fact? Yes...living near a large body of water creates cooler summer temperatures and warmer winter temperatures...(WHY)
What happens when rain falls through very cold air? The rain could become sleet, hail(with high winds) or even snow.
