abiotic relating to non-living parts of an environment such as sunlight
biotic relating to living organisms such as plants, animals, fungi and bacteria
biome the largest division of the biosphere, which includes large regions with similar biotic components ( eg. similar plants and animals) and similar abiotic.
adaptions characteristics that enable organisms to better survive and reproduce.
climate the average conditions of the atomsphere (eg. precipitation, temperature, and humidity) in a large region over 30 years or more)
terrestrial relating to the land (eg. land-based biomes)
climatograph a graph of climate data for a specific region; the data are usually obtained over 30 years from local weather observation stations.
latitude is the distance measured in degrees north or south from the equator.
Elevation Is the height of a land mass above sea level.
structural adaptation is a physical feature of an organism's body having a specific function that contributes to the survival of the organism.
physological adaptation Is a physical or chemical event that occurs within the body of an organism that enables survival.
behavioural adaptation refers to what an organism does to survive in the unique conditons of its environment
ecosystem has abiotic components such as oxygen water, nutrients, light, and soil that interact with biotic components such as plants, animals, and microorganisms
habitat is a place in which an organism lives.
nutrients (such as nitrogen, phosperous are)chemicals that are required for plant and animal growth.
photosynthesis (light is required) a chemical reation that converts solar energy into chemical energy usable by plants.
population refers to all the members of a particular species within a ecosystem
community is all the populations of the different species that interact in a specific area or ecosystem.
commensalism is a symbotic relationship in which one species benefits and the other species is neither helped nor harmed.
mutualism is a symbiotic relationship in which both organisms benefit.
parasitism is a symbiotic relationship in which one species benefits and another is harmed.
niche the special role an organism plays in a ecosystem. How it contributes and fits the environement.
symbiosis interaction between two different species that line together in a close association.
competition is a harmful interaction between two or more organisms that can occur when organisms compete for the same resource in the same location at the same time.
predation is the term used to describe predator- prey interaction in which one organism eats all part of another organism.
