| Catastrophe | A sudden, violent change in nature such as a major flood or volcanic eruption. |
| Uniformitarianism | The view (or belief) that most of earth's geological features formed over Millions of years, slowly and gradually. |
| Unconformity | A surface of erosion that seperates one layer of rock from another. |
| Petrifaction | The conversion of organic material into stone. |
| Resin | A sticky, liquid substance that usually hardens when exposed to air. |
| Fossil Record | Sum total of all fossils on the earth. |
| Extinct | A term that refers to a plant or animal that was once living but now is not. |
| Placoderms | Fish that had bony plates covering their heads instead of scales. Assumed to be extinct. |
| Amphibians | Creatures that live both in and out of water. |
