Organelles chp. 3

Cell organelles and Functions

QuestionAnswer
Ribosome that produces protein for use by the cell itself Free- Floating
Ribosome that produces protein to be shipped to the Golgi Apparatus. Ribosomes on Endoplasmic Reticulum
Membrane that surrounds chromatin and nucleolus Nuclear Membrane
The liquid portion of cytoplasm Cytosol
The gel like substance inside the cell membrane containing organelles. Cytoplasm
The 3 statement of the cell theory 1. All organisms are composed of 1 or mor cells. 2. Cells are the basic unit of structure and function of living things. 3. Cells come only from pre-existing cells.
Explain cells come only from pre-existing cells. Non-living, non-cellular material cannot be turned into living cells, a rock cannot be turned into a rabbit.
Explain - Cells are the basic unit of structure and function. How a cell is structured will determine the function it has. For example, a red blood cell contains hemoglobin is needed for oxygen to be able to attach as RBC's function to transport oxygen.
The plastid that contains chlorophyll. Chloroplast
The structure in a chloroplast that light reactions take place. Thylakoids
Chromoplast A plastid of plants that contains accessory pigments such as yellows and reds.
The dense grainy protein rich material made up of DNA found in the nucleus. Chromatin.
As chromatin condenses and thickens, during nuclear division, it becomes these? Chromosomes
Cells which do not have a nucleus and few organelles Prokaryotes
Cells which do have a nucleus and many organelles. Eukaryotes
A long whip-like structure found on cells external surface which are used for locomotion or movement. Flagellum
The processing, packaging and secreting organelle of the cell. Golgi Apparatus, or Golgi Body
A protein that runs completely through the cell membrane, allowing materials to enter and exit the cell. Integral Protein
Protein material found on the exterior of the cell membrane which is used for materials to be able to attach to the cell. Peripheral Protein
An organelle containing digestive (hydrolytic) enzymes used for breaking down worn out or weakened cells, destroying pathogens, or forming new tissues. Lysosomes
The control center of the cell, containing DNA, directing cell activities. Nucleus
Enzyme found in the mitochondria, that breaks apart bonds between phosphates of ATP molecules ATP ase
Enzyme that builds bonds between phosphate ions in an ATP molecule. ATP synthetase
You cannot store more energy in an ATP molecule because it is thought of as a ? Full Battery
No energy can be gained from AMP because it is thought of as an ? Empty Battery.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
