What is magma? The mixture of rock forming substances, gases, and water from the mantle.
What is lava? Liquid magma that reaches the surface.
What is the Ring of Fire? Major belt of volcanoes that rim the pacific ocean.
What is an island arc? A string formed by the volcanoes along a deep ocean trench.
What is a hotspot? An area where magma deep with in the mantle melts throught the crust above it.
What is an element? A substance in which all the atoms are the same that can't be broken down into other substances.
What is a compound? Substance in whichtwo or more elements are chemically joined.
What is a physical property? Characteristics of a subsances that can be observed or measured without changing the composition.
What is a chemical property? Substance that produces a change in the composition of matter.
What is viscosity? Liquid's resistance to flowing
What is silica? Material found in magma that is formed from the elements oxygen and silicon.
What is Pahoehoe? A hot, fast moving type of lava that hardens to form smooth, ropelike coils.
What is Aa? A slow moving type of lava that hardens to form a rough chunks.
What is a magma chamber? The pocket where magma collects.
What is a pipe? The long tube that magmas goes up through to reach the surface.
What is a vent? The opening where magma leaves.
What is lava flow? The area covered by lava as it is pours out of a volcanoe's vent.
What is a crater? A bowl shaped srea that forms around a volcanoe's central opening.
What is a pyroclastic flow? The expulsion of ash, cinders, and gases during an explosive eruption.
What is dormant? A volcano that is not currently active but, that may be active in the future.
What is extinct? A volcano that is no longer active and is unlikely to erupt again.
What is a sheild volcano? A wide, gentle, sloping mountain made of layers of lavs and formed by quiet eruptions.
What is a cinder cone? A steep cone shape hill or small mountain made of volcanic ash, cinders, and bombs piled up around a volcano's opening.
What is a composite volcano? A tall, cone shaped mountain in which layers of lavs alternate with layers of ash and other volcanic materials.
What is a caldera? The large hole at the top of a volcano formed when the roof of a volcano's magma chamber collappses.
What is a volcanic neck? A deposit of hardend magma in a volcano's pipe
What is a dike? A slab of volcanic rock formed when magma forces itself across rock layers.
What is a sill? A slab of volcanic rock formed when magma sqeezes between layers of rock.
What is a batholith? A mass of rock formed when a large body of magma cools inside the crust.
What is geothermal activity? The heating of underground water by magma.
