Plant & Animal Cells

Parts & Jobs of Plant & Animal Cells

QuestionAnswer
What is a cell wall and what does it do? A cell wall is a rigid layer of non-living material that surrounds the cell. It also protects the cell and supports it.
What is a cell membrane and what does it do? The cell membrane is a barrier just inside the cell wall, and it separates the cell from it's environment. It also controls what comes into the cell and what goes out.
What is a nucleus and what is it's function? The nucleus is like the brain of a cell, every cell has them, and it controls all of the cell's activities.
What is the cytoplasm and what is it's function? The cytoplasm is a gel-like fluid and many other organelles can be found inside the cytoplasm.
What is a mitochondria and what does it do? They are rod shaped organelles that produce energy for the cell.
What is the endoplasmic reticulum and what does it do? It is a maze of passageways that carry proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another.
What is a ribosome and what does it do? Ribosomes are small, grainlike bodies that either are attached to parts of the endoplasmic reticulum or float in the cytoplasm. Ribosomes produce proteins.
What is a golgi body and what does it do? Golgi bodies look like flattened sacs and tubes, or like ribbons of spaghetti. Like a mail room, golgi bodies receive newly formed materials and proteins an from the endoplasmic reticulum and distribute them to other parts of the cell.
What is a chloroplast and what is it's function? They are organelles only found in plant cells and they capture sunlight and use it to make food for the cell.
What is a vacoule and what does it do? The vacoule is found in the cytoplasm. The vacoule is a storage area for the cell.
What are lysomes and what is their function? Lysomes are small round structures that contain chemicals that breaks down certain materials in the cell.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
