rocks

quest :)

?A
what are igneous rocks made of? hot molten rock cooling (lava or magma)
how do u classify igneous rocks? based on mineral composition and crystal structure and texture
what is instrusive? forms when magma cools inside the earth
what are the 2 main categories of igneous rock? instrusive and extrusive
what is an example of instrusive rock? granite
what is exstrusive rock? formed from lava
what are the 4 types of texture of igneous rock? glassy, fine-grained, course-grained, porphyritic
example of glassy igneous obsidian
example of fine-grained igneous basalt
example of course-grained igneous granite
example of porphyritic igneous trachyte
example of extrusive rock obsidian
what are fine-grained rocks made of? interlocking mineral crystals
what are course-grained igneous rocks made of? interlocking mineral crystals that are the same size
what are porphyritic igneous rocks made of? large crystals scattered on a background of smaller crystals
what are sedimentary rocks made of? particles that have been carried along and deposited by wind and water (sediments)
what are clastic rocks? sedimentary rocks made from previously existing rocks
how are clastic rocks classified? by size and shape of the particles in them
what is a conglomerate? a clastic rock that has pebbles as at least one third of it
what are conglomerates sometimes called? puddingstones
what are sandstones? clastic rocks made from small, sand-sized pieces
how are sandstones formed? from sand on beaches, riverbeds, and sand-dunes cementing together by minerals that harden in small spaces/pores between the grains
what is shale? clastic rocks made of particles smaller than sand
how is shale formed? from small particles of mud and clay that settle to the bottom of quiet bodies of water
how do organic rocks form? from either directly or indirectly from material that was once living
example of organic rock limestone
how are reefs formed? many animals with limestone shells live together. they cement their shells together and overtime form these large structures
what is chalk? a type of fine-grained limestone composed of microscopic shells, small fragments of shells, and calcite crystals
how are chemical rocks formed? formed when a sea or lake dries up, leaving laarge amonts of minerals that were dissolved in the water
example of chemical rock rock salt and gypsum
how is metamorphic rock formed? when chemical reactions, tremendous heat, and/or great pressure change existing rocks into new kinds of rocks
what does morph mean? form
what does meta mean? change
what can metamorphic rocks be formed from? igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
