longitude is the distance east or west of the prime meridian measured in degrees
What happens to a map when it is created? Distortion.
the Mercator projection parallel lines-maks map rectangular. Shows directions accuratly. Can have cuts in top
Robinson Projection map show most distances, sizes and shapes accuratly. Distorted around edges of map.
conic projects made by wrapping a cone around globe at a particular line of latitude. Points projected on paper. There is little distortion at the center but as it goes out more distortion is shown. Road and Weather maps
Gnonomic Projects made by placeing a piece of paper on a globe so it touches a single point on the globes surface. show shortest distance between two points.
Topogrpahic map represents earths three diminsinal surface in two diminsions
contour interval tells the diffrence in elevation between adjacent lines.
geologic map a topographical map showing the type and age of rock expossed.
Earth system sciences (aim) to understand Earth as a system of numerous interacting parts or subsystem
Earth system sciences way of viewing Earth as a whole
What is a system? Any size group having interacting parts that form a complex whole.
What are the two sorces that power Earth? Sun, and Earths interior.
What happens when we take action? Produces changes in other parts of the Earths system.
Renewable Resources resources that can be replenished over relatively short time spans.
Nonrenewable Resources the process to produce these are so slow that we have limited quanitys of these materials
What are some possible threats to envormental damage? Air pollution, acid rain, ozone depletion and global warming.
Scientific hypothesis try to explain how or why things happen in the manner observed. Possible eplanation
Scientific Theory An idea that has been well tested and widely accepted in the scientific community that best explains observable facts.
