| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| geology | study of earth |
| earth scince | name for the group of sciences that deals with Earth and its neighbors in space |
| Astronomy | the study of the universe |
| oceanography | study of the composition and movements of water, as well as coastlal processes, seafloor topography, marine life |
| meterorology | the study of the atmosphere and the processes that produce weather and climate. |
| the nebular hypothesis | ideal that expressed that bodies in our solar system evolved from an enormous rotating cloud (AKA Solar Nebula: hydrogen and helium) |
| Hydrosphere | water portion of our planet |
| atmosphere | earths gaseous Envelope |
| geosphere | the earths continante portion |
| Earths spheres | Hydrosphere, atmosphere, geosphere, biosphere |
| biosphere | all life-forms on Earth |
| Geosphere's three main parts | core, mantle, crust |
| Why is the geosphere divided into parts? | It is not uniform |
| Plate Techtonics | theory explaining how earthquakes, volcanic eruptions occur and how continents move |
| Latitude | the distance north or south of the equator measured in degrees |
| longitude | is the distance east or west of the prime meridian measured in degrees |
| What happens to a map when it is created? | Distortion. |
| the Mercator projection | parallel lines-maks map rectangular. Shows directions accuratly. Can have cuts in top |
| Robinson Projection map | show most distances, sizes and shapes accuratly. Distorted around edges of map. |
| conic projects | made by wrapping a cone around globe at a particular line of latitude. Points projected on paper. There is little distortion at the center but as it goes out more distortion is shown. Road and Weather maps |
| Gnonomic Projects | made by placeing a piece of paper on a globe so it touches a single point on the globes surface. show shortest distance between two points. |
| Topogrpahic map | represents earths three diminsinal surface in two diminsions |
| contour interval | tells the diffrence in elevation between adjacent lines. |
| geologic map | a topographical map showing the type and age of rock expossed. |
| Earth system sciences (aim) | to understand Earth as a system of numerous interacting parts or subsystem |
| Earth system sciences | way of viewing Earth as a whole |
| What is a system? | Any size group having interacting parts that form a complex whole. |
| What are the two sorces that power Earth? | Sun, and Earths interior. |
| What happens when we take action? | Produces changes in other parts of the Earths system. |
| Renewable Resources | resources that can be replenished over relatively short time spans. |
| Nonrenewable Resources | the process to produce these are so slow that we have limited quanitys of these materials |
| What are some possible threats to envormental damage? | Air pollution, acid rain, ozone depletion and global warming. |
| Scientific hypothesis | try to explain how or why things happen in the manner observed. Possible eplanation |
| Scientific Theory | An idea that has been well tested and widely accepted in the scientific community that best explains observable facts. |
