What is Hypothesis and give example? When you make a ulter guess. Like how much money I will get for my birthday.
Why is it important for scientists to publish the details of their experiments as well as the results? So their peers can evulate the experiment and results who are conducting similar research whether it is now or in the future. This way there is data stored and recorded.
What is a theory? An explanation of a natural phenomenon supported by many observations & experiments overtime (Cell theory & Theory of evolution)
Where do decomposers get their food from? From dead or decaying organisms
What is the difference between a quantitative and a qualitative measurement? Quantitative- Data collectied as number (Time, temp, length, mass, area, volume) Qualitative- Descriptions of what our senses detective.
Why is it important to understand science? Because science is in your every day life.Measuring mixture and all sorts of stuff.
Describe the difference between an observation and an inference Observation-Direct method of gathering info. in an orderly way. Interference-combine what you know with what you have learned & begin in a process of making logical conclusions.
What is a variable? Is the factor in the experiment that is being texted.
What are independent variables?
What is a stimulus? Give an example A reaction to something like. Like a shark smelling blood in water and going towards it. Plant leaning towards the sun coming through the window.
What is the correct sequence for the steps of the scientific method? 1-State the problem #2Propose a hypothesis #3-Experiment to gather data #4-Analyze data for conclusion. #5- Share results so others can repeat experiment.
Define Parasitism When one organism benefits at the expense of another.
What are the 3 symbiotic relationships? Parasitism, Commensalism, Mutualism
What is a food web? A model representing the many interconnected food chains & pathways in which energy flows through a group of organisms.
Define Commensalism When on organism benefits & the other organism is neither helped nor harmed.
Define Mutulaism Relationship between 2 or more organisms that live closely together and benefit from each other.
Define Niche Is the role or position that an organism has in its environment
Define Competition when more than 1 organism uses a resource at the same time.
Define Ecosystem Biological community and all of the abiotic factors that affect it
Define Climate Avergae weather conditions in an area, including Temp.and precipitation
Define Habitat Area where organism lives
Define Community A group of interacting populations that occupy the same area at the same time.
Define Population Indidivual organisms of a single species that share the same geographic location at the same time.
Where does all energy ultimately come from? Sun and plants
Describe an ecological pyramid. (Include the different levels.) To show the relative amounts of energy, biomass, or numers of organism at each trophic level in an ecosystem.
What happens when CO2 gets trapped in the atmosphere? It discipates in the ozone layer
What is the difference between an abiotic and biotic factor Abiotic-Nonliving factors in an organism's environment. Biotic- living factors
Explain a predator-prey relationship Predator pursues and eats the prey.Prey- is the organism that is being pursued
What is the function of ozone Is a protective layer in the atmosphere that absorbs most of the harmful UV radiation from the sun.
Explain the difference between primary & secondary succession? Primary-A community in an area with rocks and no topsoil. (Lichen) Secondary-The orderly predicatable change that takes place after a community of organisms have been removed but the soil is still in tact.
What is a climax community? Mature community that results when there is little change in the compostion of species.
What is a K-Strategist? Produce on a few offspring that have a better chance of living to reproductine age (Humans)
What is a R-Strategist? Producs as many offspring as possible in a short time. (Spiders & Bees)
Describe nitrogen fixation The process of capture & conversation of nitrogen into a form that is usable by plants.
Describe Denitrification some soil bacteria convert fixed nitrogen compounds back into nitrogen gas, which returns it to the atmosphere
What does manure and fertilizer do (to soil & plants)? It improves soil structure and plant growth
What is exponential growth? Give example a result of postive population growth at a constant rate (the world population)
What is logistic growth? Give example Where by the growth raste declines as the population increases (Japan)
What biome would have the following conditions: Broad leaf trees, mosses, orchids, 20-25 temp., and . 200 cm of rain per year Tropical rain forest
