| Anaphylaxis | Type I hypersensitivity reaction between alleric antigen and IgE bound to mast cells, stimulates sudden release of immunologic mediator locally or systemically, life threatening. |
| Antibody | Substance produced by B lymphocytes in response to a unique antigen. |
| Anti-Inflammatory | counteracting inflammation suppresses or treats inflammatory diseases or conditions. |
| Antipyretic | reduces fever |
| Atrophy | wasting, decrease in size of organ or tissue. |
| Autoimmunity | Body's tolerance of antigens present on its own cells. |
| Cell Mediated Immunity | regulatory and cytotoxic activities of T cells during specific immune response. About 36 hours to reach full effect. |
| Clostridium difficile | species causes watery diarrhea, fever, anorexia, ABD pain, sometimes pseudomembranous colitis esp in patients treated wtih antibiotics or confined to hospital |
| Acid-Fast Bacilli | bacillus not readily decolorized by acids or other means when stained. |
| Complement | Group of proteins, play vital role in body's immune defenses through a cascade of interactions. C1-C9. Acts by directly lysing organisms. |
| Dysplasia | Abnormal development of tissue. |
| HIV | Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Retrovirus of subfamily lentivirus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. |
| Immunocompetence | Ability of body's immune system system to respond to pathogenic organisms and tissue damage. |
| Hypersensitivity | Abnormal sensitivity to stimulus of any kind. |
| Leukocytosis | Increase in number of leukocytes in blood. Commonly in disease processes with infection. |
| Lymphocytes | WBC responsible for much of the body's immune protection. Less than 1% present in circulatng blood, the rest in lymph nodes, spleen and other lymph organs. |
| Macrophage | Monocyte that left circulation, settled and matured in a tissue. Large quantities in lymph organs. |
| Mantoux | test for TB |
| MRSA | methicillin resistent staph aureus |
| Necrosis | Death of cells, tissues or organs |
| Neutropenia | presence os abnormally small number of neutrophils in the blood, usually less than 1500-2000. |
| Nosocomial | occurring in a health care setting. |
| Shift to the Left | Increase in immature leukocytes. |
| VRE | vancomycin resistent enterococcus |
| VRSA | vancomycin resistent staph aureus |
| Western Blot | test to analyze protein antigens. detects small amounts of antibodies. |
