Chapter 3: Maps
Earth Science Maps
Question | Answer |
---|---|
legend | list of symbols and their meaning on a map |
scale | the relationship between distance and actual distance on a map. fractional scale |
contour line | a line connecting points of equal elevation |
topography | size and shape of features on earth's surface |
elevation | height above sea level of a landform |
depression | an area that is lower in topography than its surroundings |
saddle | the area of land between two hilltops |
remote sensing | studying information about a site without actually traveling there |
compass | a tool that aligns with the geomagnetic north (when in the northern hemisphere) |
distortion | transferring a curved surface to a flat surface results in this |
example of a fractional scale | 1/100, 1:100 |
cartographer | the science of map making |
field surveys and satellite images (remote sensing) | data used to make maps |
cardinal directions | N S E W |
GPS | Global Positioning System |
groundtruthing | When a scientist physically checks the earth for what they saw on a remote image. |
Google Earth Coordinates | latitude is first and longitude is listed second. These coordinates are always found on the lower part of the page when using Google Earth. |
latitude | map lines that measure north and south of the equator |
longitude | map lines that measure east and west of the prime meridian |
contour interval | the elevation measured between the contour lines on a topographic map |
field survey and remote sensing | both of these are used to make maps |
Equator | this is a line of latitude that goes completely around the earth and is known as a great circle |
How are latitude and longitude measured? | degrees, minutes, and seconds |
compass rose | indicates cardinal directions N S E W |
