QuestionAnswer
What is an earthquake? An earthquake is when the Earth's crust move.
What causes an Earthquake? Sometimes when plates move they push together and slip and there is a jolt, that is what we feel as an Earthquake.
What is a seismograph? An instrument that measures and records details of earthquakes, such as force and duration.
Name 2 seismic waves: P waves, and S waves, or Surface waves
Name some of the effects of an Earthquake: Fire,Tsunami,Floods,Landslides and avalanches, etc..
What are P waves? The P wave alternately compresses and expandsmaterial in the same direction it is traveling.
What are S waves? The S wave isslower than the P wave and arrives next, shaking the groundup and down and back and fort to the direction it is traveling.
How many major plates are there? There are 13 major plate tectonics.
What is the correct order of the seismic waves? First: P waves.. Second: S waves.. Third: Surface waves
Earthquakes can occur with ________ faulting. Normal, Reverse, Thrust, or All of them?? All of them!
What causes the wiggles on a seismograph? The vibration of the ground.
What is the point on the surface nearest the earthquake? The epicenter
Where do most earthquakes occur? Along faults
Which waves cause a circular particle motion? S waves, P waves, Surface waves, or All of them. Surface waves
Which waves cause a particle motion that is back and forth? S waves, P waves, Surface waves, or All of them. P waves
Which waves are called compression waves because they compress and extend the material they pass through? P waves.
What is the focus in an Earthquake? The focus of an earthquake is the point in the earth where the earthquake fault movement actually occurred.
What is an epicenter? The point on the surface directly above the focus.
Where is the safest place to be during an Earthquake? Under a table, and if you are outdoors, then go as far away from anything that can fall on you (open field).
