Hair and fibers


What is trace evidence? Any very small physical material that can be transferred from person to person or between a person and a crime scene.
What are the hair's anatomy? The cortex, cuticle and medulla.
What is the cortex? Largest portion of the shaft.
What is the cuticle? The layer of cells that cover the surface of the shaft.
What is the medulla? The cell that runs down the center of the cortex.
What are the three basic types of the cuticle? Coronal(crown-rat), Spinous(petal-cat), and imbricate(flattened-humans).
What is the differnece between a human's medullary index and an animal's? The human's is 0.3 in width and the animal's is greater than 0.5.
What is the study of hair? Trichology.
What provides the most features for comparison to other hairs and explain why? Scalp hair, because it has the most characteristics.
4 classifications of fiber? Mineral(glass),Animal(silk), Vegetable(cotton), and synthetic(nylon).
What are the tests? Burn(beading), Solvent/Solubility( bleach), Stain(will blood stain the cloth),Microscopic test(braids).
What are the two collection methods? The tape method and sweeping/vacuming method.
