Ter eco final p

Practice for final exam in terrestrial ecosystems at Fleming College

QuestionAnswer
Burn along soil surface and consume surface litter Kills shrubs and other under story plants Generally cool fires that result in no major changes in visible structure of a forest Surface fire
Reach into crowns of dominant trees Burn foiliage, branches, stems and forest floor Much hotter than surface fires and can kill a large number of dominant trees in the eco system Crown fire
Occurs in areas where there are large accumulations of OM over mineral soil Burns slowly over long periods and help to consume accumulated surface OM Fire intensity depends on amount of OM present, it's structure and it's moisture content Ground fires
Initial increase in nutrient concentration due to the position of ash from burned OM Run off or wind can result in nutrient loss Increased microbial activity due to increased PH and soil temperature Soil and nutrient cycle
Effects vary depending on size of burn, characteristics of specific site in surrounding water shed Hydrology
mammals with hooves Ungulates (artiodactyla)
Environmental responsibility - community members - private land owners - government representatives - volunteers Land stewardship
Inform land owners about the value of an ecologically friendly approach Purpose of land stewardship
The Ontario stewardship program is run by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Each counsel defines the purpose of their stewardship activities and each one of the 46 council has their own mission statements Stewardship council
There are many types of stewardship activities across a wide range of habitats, however we will focus on two Conservation land tax incentive program (CLTIP) and Managed forest tax incentive program (MFTIP)
A program to help protect Ontario's land and bio diversity This program is intended to provide land owners - will not remove kland ownership from private property - provides 100% land tax relief The CLTIP
Natural land identified by the OMNR or Niagara Escarpment Commission (NEC) to be a provincially significant natural feature Land must be .2 hectares in size minimum Conservation Land Tax Insentive Program Eligibility
If land owners sign up for the CLTIP and are approved, they cannot harvest, build on or compromise the integrity of their land Land use under the CLTIP
Provincially significant wetland, provincially significant areas of natural and scientific interest Habitat of endangered species Land designated as Escarpment natural area in the Niagara Escarpment Plan Community conservation lands The type of land acceptable by the CLTIP
Land stewardship initiative to encourage land owners to maintain forest eco systems through proper management on their properties MFTIP
The MFTIP is operated by the OMNR and the Ontario Forestry Association and Ontario Woodlot Association Organizations that run the MFTIP
All properties required within the program must have a forest management plan approved by a managed forest plan approver MFTIP plan
Land owner must follow mandatory criteria to be considered for the 75% tax break on their land The criteria are: the property is in Ontario, the property is owned by a Canadian citizen/permanent resident/Canadian Corporation or the Conservation Authority First part of criteria for MFTIP
Forest must cover a minimum of 4 acres, forest only on the property with only one municipal roll number Forest part of the requirements for MFTIP
The forest includes a minimum of a thousand stems of any size per hectar, a minimum of 750 stems greater than 5 cms per hectar, a minimum of 500 stems greater than 12 cm per hectar and a minimum of 250 stems per hectar greatere than 20 cms Tree size requirements for MFTIP
Forest opening and abandoned agriculture fields can occupy 10% of the forested land at maximum Swamps and beaver floods can not occupy more than 25% of the forest Open area requirements for MFTIP
Slated for sub division development Licensed under the agregate resources Act or is slated for agregate extraction Owned by a municipal, provincial or Federal government Camp grounds Ski hills Ineligible properties for the MFTIP
Prepare a managed forest plan, have your managed forest plan approved, submit the application package by the deadline Three steps to preparing a managed forest plan
Either as a land owner or a managed forest plan approver, the managed forest plan must meet the needs of the land owner Developing a plan
Management activities Tree planting or harvesting Recreational activities - hiking, skiing and hunting Wild life management/participating in a monitoring program Protecting environmental sensitive areas Overall, learn about the forest Identifyint the needs of the land owner for developing a plan
Not allowed to high grade No farming of animals Cannot remove soil from the forest Continue in activities that degrades the forest Things that are not allowed when developing a plan
Submit a 5 yr progress report due by July 31 of the 5th yr Any management changes must be documented If a 5 yr report is not filed, land owners will be removed from the program Staying qualified under the MFTIP
10 yr plan update Update any changes from the 5 yr progress report Potential re assessment of forest data if major harvesting activities have taken place Stayin qualified under the MFTIP
