amoebeid movement Movement by streaming of protoplasm
asexual Independent of sexual processes; of two types: budding and fission
chlorophyll The green pigment which enables plants to use sunlight and manufacture food
cilia (cilium) Hairlike bits of protoplasm that project from certain kinds of cells. Some animals use cilia for locomotion or feeding
conjugation A kind of reproduction in which two unicellular organisms unite temporarily to exchange nuclear material and then separate
contractile vacuole A vacuole in unicellular organisms that collects water and waste and expels them in order to maintain the organisms proper water content
cyst A protective capsule occupied by protozoans during unfavorable conditions of environment
excreting vacuole A contractile vacuole
fission A method of reproduction in which the body of the parent divides to form two or more independent individuals
flagellum (flagella) A long, whiplike tail or part, used by certain protozoans for locomotion
food vacuole A vacuole in which food particles are digested by enzymes
nucleus A mass of specialized protoplasm found in most plant and animal cells, which controls growth and cell division. A nucleus is different in structure from the rest of the cell.
nucleus (cont.) It consists of a complex arrangement of proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids surrounded by a membrane and containing chromosomes and nucleoli
paramylum bodies Bodies that contain a starchlike food reserve found in certain unicellular organisms
parasite An organism living in or on another organism
photosynthesis The process if manufacturing food by means of green plant pigment, sunlight,water, and carbon dioxide.
protoplasm The basic living substance of all living organisms
pseudopodium False feet (the streaming protoplasm of the amoeba)
