Chapter 2 Section 3
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Name the three main categories of sedimentary rock. | Clastic, Organic, and Chemical |
What is clastic sedimentary rock? Give an example. | Rock made of fragments that have been cemented together by a mineral. Shale, Siltstone, or Conglomerate. |
What is chemical sedimentary rock? Give an example. | Rock that forms from solutions of dissolved minerals and water. Rock salt, Limestone, or Rock Gypsum. |
What is organic sedimentary rock? Give an example. | Rock that forms from remains or fossils. Cocquina, Fossil Limestone, or Coal. |
Explain the process by which clastic sedimentary rock forms. | When mineral fragments called clasts are cemented together, clastic rock forms. |
Explain the process by which chemical sedimentary rock forms. | Rainwater makes its way to the ocean and dissolves some of the rock material it passes through and then this material crystallizes and forms minerals. These minerals form chemical sedimentary rock. |
Why do you think raindrop impressions are more likely to be preserved in fine-grained sedimentary rock rather that in coarse-grained rock? | Fine-grained sedimentary rock have a smoother surface so raindrop impressions are more likely to be preserved and seen. |
What is the difference between strata and stratification? | Strata are layers of rock and Stratification is process in which rocks are arranged in layers. |
What are mud cracks and how do they form? | Mud cracks are structures that form when fine-grained sediments at the bottom of a shallow body of water are exposed to the air and dry out. |
