What are strata? layers of rock.
What is sratisfaction? The process in which sedimentary rocks are arranged in layers.
Foilated metamorphic rock. the texture of metamorphic rock in whick the mineral grains are arranged in planes or bands.
mineral any of a class of substances occurring in nature, usually comprising inorganic substances,
element Chemistry . one of a class of substances that cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical means. See also chart under periodic table.
compound something formed by compounding or combining parts, elements, etc.
crystal Mineralogy . a solid body having a characteristic internal structure and enclosed by symmetrically arranged plane surfaces, intersecting at definite and characteristic angles.
silicate minerals Silicate is a chemical term for the group of a single atom of silicon surrounded by four atoms of oxygen, or SiO4, in the shape of a tetrahedron
nonsilicate minerals 1. Non-silicates are minerals other than silicate minerals
native elements (geology) Any of 20 elements, such as copper, gold, and silver, which occur naturally uncombined in a nongaseous state; there are three groups—metals, semimetals, and nonmetals.
Carbonates...... salt or ester of carbonic acid.
halides 1. a chemical compound in which one of the elements is a halogen. adjective 2. of, pertaining to, or characteristic of a halide.
oxides "compound of oxygen with another element," 1790, from Fr. oxide (1787), coined by G. de Morveau and A. Lavoisier from ox(ygène) + (ac)ide. See oxygen.
sulfides A compound of bivalent sulfur with an electropositive element or group, especially a binary compound of sulfur with a metal.
sulfates Chemistry . a salt or ester of sulfuric acid.
luster the state or quality of shining by reflecting light; glitter, sparkle, sheen, or gloss: the luster of satin.
streak to mark with a streak or streaks; form streaks on:
cleavage the tendency of crystals, certain minerals, rocks, etc., to break in preferred directions so as to yield more or less smooth surfaces (cleavage planes).
fracture the characteristic appearance of a broken surface, as of a mineral.
Density mass per unit volume.
dikes to enclose, restrain, or protect by a dike: to dike a tract of land.
sills Geology . a tabular body of intrusive igneous rock, ordinarily between beds of sedimentary rocks or layers of volcanic ejecta.
batholiths a large body of intrusive igneous rock believed to have crystallized at a considerable depth below the earth's surface; pluton.
stocks a quantity of something accumulated, as for future use: a stock of provisions.
fissures a narrow opening produced by cleavage or separation of parts.
