| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| acid | any substance which donates a hydrogen atom during disassociation |
| anion | a negatively charged ion; an atom which has gained an electron |
| base (or alkali) | any substance capable of combining with a hydrogen; it normally donates a hydroxyl |
| buffer | a substance which will resist changes in pH within reasonable limits |
| cation | a positively charged ion; an atom which has lost an electron |
| chemical bond | the union between atoms by the interaction of their electrons in the outermost orbit |
| chemical reaction | when the atoms of one element or compound interact to form at least one new compound |
| covalent bond | a chemical bond formed between two atoms by the sharing of electrons |
| hydrogen bond | a weak chemical bond when a hydrogen atom is shared by two adjacent molecules |
| inorganic | a chemical compound not containing carbon |
| ion | an electrically charged atom or group of atoms formed by the loss or gain of electrons |
| ionic bond | a bond formed by the electrical attraction between two oppositely charged ions |
| organic | any chemical compound which contains carbon |
| pH | a measure of the hydrogen ion concentration in a solution. as the hydrogen ion concentration increase the pH falls. a neutral pH is 7, with those below being acidic and those above basic |
| salt | the compound formed by the ionic bonding of a cation and anion |
| solute | a substance which is dissolved in a liquid |
| solvent | a liquid that acts to dissolve or suspend solutes for chemical reaction or transport |
| valence | the number of electrons an element must gain or lose in order to complete its outer electron shell |
