Energy Sources & Alternative Energy

QuestionAnswer
What fossil fuels provide most of the energy in the US? coal, natural gas, petroleum, oil
What is crude oil and what are the 2 elements the compounds it is mostly made from? Petroleum -carbon and hydrogen (hydrocarbons!)
How do oil and gas start their lives? How are they born? plankton!
Where does oil get trapped after it migrates? reservoirs - pockets in rock
Describe primary and secondary oil. What are some methods of enhanced oil recovery? Primary - using no techniques beyond pumping Secondary - pumping water into reservoirs to fill empty pore spaces and buoy more water to the surface gas injection, chemical injection, microbial injection, thermal (heat) recovery ((setting it on fire))
What are some alternate sources of oil and gas? oil sand, tar sand, gas hydrates, methane hydrates
From what is coal formed? Remains of plants
How is coal classified? by type and sulfur content based on % of C and its heat value on combustion
How much plant life is required to make 1 foot of coal? 7 ft +
What are some of the environmental issues associated with burning coal? gases and ash
Whare are the 2 types of processes that can generate nuclear energy? Which one is more common? Fission and Fusion. Fission is more common.

Why are most geothermal energy plants located near plate boundaries? its where the most heat is radiated from the earth's surface
What are some limiations that restrict geothermal energy? geothermal fields have a short lifespan power plants and the resource cannot be moved minimal # of sites are suitable
Traditional geothermal power generation uses.... water or steam heated by hot rocks near the surface
