Theory of Evolution

QuestionAnswer
what are amino acids ? small molecules that are the components of proteins
a sequence of 3 nucleotide bases in a DNA molecule that codes for a specific type of amino acid to be assembled in the protein synthesis process a codon .
What is a biospecies ? a species that has been defined on the basis of the ability to produce fertile offspring.
genetic change in a population of organisms that occurs over time. The term is also frequently used to refer to the appearance of a new species ? Is the term called evolution.
What are fossils ? any remains or traces of an ancient organism. Examples of fossils are mineralized bones and casts and imprints of plants or animals.
What are genetics ? the study of gene structure and action and the patterns of inheritance of traits from parent to offspring.
group of single celled animal species. Protozoa are classified as being members of the kingdom Protista ? Protozoa .
what is genus ? a group of closely related species. In the Linnaean classification system, genus is the category immediately above species.
specific micro-habitats in nature to which populations or organisms adapt. They are usually seen in terms of being food getting opportunities in the environment ? they're called ecological niches .
Binomial nomenclature ? in taxonomy, the convention established by Carolus Linnaeus whereby genus and species names are used to refer to species.
the relatively rapid expansion and diversification of an evolving group of organisms as they adapt to new ecological niches ? Adaption radiations .
What is vertebrates ? members of the animal subphylum Vertebrata. Vertebrates possess a spinal chord protected by a segmented vertebral column of cartilage and/or bone.
referring to the full component of chromosomes normally found in somatic cells. In humans, the number is 46 ? they're diploid numbers
is a domiant allele ? an allele that masks the presence of a recessive allele
the twisted ladder shape that is characteristic of DNA molecules ? double helix.
another term for down syndrome ? genetically inherited form of mental retardation usually resulting from the inheritance of an extra autosome 21.
a usually recurrent disorder of the brain characterized by abnormal electrical activity which causes mental and physical dysfunction ? epilepsy .
what is fertilization ? the process of sexual reproduction by which the chromosomes from a sperm cell enter the nucleus of an ovum and combine with its chromosomes to create a zygote.
the number of times that something happens. For example, the number of people out of 100 who get divorced would be the frequency of divorce ? frequency.
Genetic drift ? evolution, or change in gene pool frequencies, resulting from random chance.
the situation in which a population is not evolving from generation to generation--that is, the population's gene pool frequencies remain unchanged ? genetic equilibrium .
is called heterosis ? increased health of individuals who are the result of negative assortative mating, or crossbreeding.
the viruses that are responsible for causings AID's ? it's called HIV.
what's an ovum ? the female sex cell or gamete.
