What is a primary structure? A sequence of amino acids in a polypeptide chain
What four elements are always present in an amino acid? Oxygen, Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Carbon
What two types of secondary structure are there? Alpha helix & Beta pleat
How many polypeptide chains does haemoglobin contain? Four
What is a tertiary structure? A complex 3D shape, polypeptide chains twist and fold even more than a secondary structure
What protein structure do enzymes have? Tertiary
What element do the Haem groups in haemoglobin contain? Iron
What is oxyhaemoglobin? Fully oxygenated haemoglobin. 1 molecule of Hb can carry 4 oxygen molecules
How many oxygen molecules can a complete haemoglobin carry at one time? Four- one in each haem group
What are the two different types of protein? Globular and fibrous
Are fibrous proteins soluble or insoluble? Insoluble
What is a prosthetic group? A group that is chemically different to the rest of the molecule
What may a function of a globular protein be? An enzyme, pigment, antibody, or hormone
What do amino acids differ in? Their R-Groups
What is a chain of amino acids called? A polypeptide
What is a condensation reaction? A reaction in which water is lost to bond two molecules together- for example used to create a peptide bond
What is a peptide bond? When two amino acids join together
