Quiz on topography

QuestionAnswer
Topography The shape of the land and includes an area's elevation, relief, and landforms.
Relief The difference in elevation between the highest and lowest parts of an area.
Elevation The height above sea level of a point on Earht's surface.
Landform A feature of topography, formed by the processes that shape the Earth's surfce.
Plain A landform that isnearly flat or gently rolling land with low relief.
Mountain A landform with high elevation and high relief.
Mountain Range A group of mountains that are closely related in shape, structure, and age.
Plateau A landform that has high elevation and a more or less level surface.
Map A flat model of all or part of Earth's surface as seen from above.
Scale On a map the scale relates the distance on a map to a distance on Earth's surface. (often given as a ratio--1:10)
Symbols Shapes and pictures used on a map to stand for features on Earth's surface. Can be physical-lake, trees--or man-made-buildings, roads.
Key A map's legend, that is a list of all the symbols used on the map with an explanation of their meaning.
Topographic map A map showing the surface features of an area.
Contour Line On a topographic map, the lines that connect points of equal elevation. (Usually meas in ft.)
Contour interval The change in elevation from contour lines to contour line. Always the same amount of difference between lines.
Index Contour Every fifth contour line labeled in elevation, in round numbers, a darker line.
