Sexual/Asexual Repro

Sexual & Asexual Reproduction

QuestionAnswer
What is reproduction? The process by which organisms produce offspring
Where is genetic information stored in? DNA
Through which process is DNA copied? DNA replication
What is binary fission? When a cell splits in two parts
What is mitosis? The process through which a nucleus divides in two in such a way that each new cell receives a complete set of chromosomes.
What is asexual reproduction? The production of offspring by a single parent
What is sexual reproduction? Two parent cells join together to form a new individual.
What does mitosis produce? Two daughter cells that are identical to each other and to the parent cells.
During mitosis, how many chromosomes are produced? Number of chromosomes remains the same as in the parent cell.
What is mitotic division helpful for? Body cells are able to grow new tissue and/or repair existing tissue.
What is the first phase during mitosis? Interphase
What phase comes after interphase? Prophase
What phase comes after prophase? Metaphase
What phase comes after metaphase? Anaphase
What phase comes after anaphase? Telophase
Meiotic division only occurs in... Eukaryotic cells
What does meiosis produce? Four daughter cells that are genetically diverse.
What happens in meiosis that does not happen in mitosis? Crossing over
What is crossing over? A process when two chromosomes pair up and exchange parts of their DNA.
What does crossing over provide? Genetic diversity between the parents and their offspring.
How many chromosomes are produced in meiosis? Offspring contain half the chromosomes than the parents?
How are the processes of mitosis and meiosis similar to each other? Both processes begin with similar events, including chromosome replication.
What cells are produced through meiosis? Sex cells
How do mutations lead to genetic variation? By producing random changes in an organism's genetic code

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
