| moraine | rock debris deposited by glaciers |
| glacial till | an unsorted mixture of rock materials deposited as a glacier melts |
| erratic | isolated boulders left behind by a glacier |
| outwash plains | gravel, sand, and clay carried from glaciers by melting water and streams |
| humus | leftover plant and animal material in soil |
| horizon | a layer of soil differing from the layers above and bleow it |
| topsoil | the top layer of soil, the A horizon |
| subsoil | the layer of soil below the topsoil, the B horizon |
| soil profile | a vertical section of soil from the surface down to bedrock |
| pore space | spaces between soil particles |
| permeability | the rate at which water can pass through a porous material |
