QuestionAnswer
What is the soft layer of the upper mantle? The Asthenosphere
What does the crust and upper mantle make up? The Lithosphere
What are the three types of heat transfer? Radiation, convection, and conduction.
Where does subduction take place? The deep ocean Trench
What are the four main layers of the Earth? Crust, Mantle, Outer and Inner core
What are the three types of plate boundaries? Divergent, Convergent, and transforming Boundaries
What evidence did geologists use to study the structure of Earth? Rock Samples
Why are there convection currents in the mantle? Heat from the core and mantle make the magma sink and rise or melt and harden going in a cycle.
What happens when an oceanic and continental plate collide? The denser plate sub-ducts
What happens when two plates of oceanic crust collide? It causes underwater volcanoes
What happens when two plates of continental crust collide? It forms mountains
What force do geologists think caused plate tectonics? Convection currents in the mantle was the cause
What evidence did Wegner use to support his theory of Continental Drift? The shape of the continents, the fossils found on different continents, and the change in weather.
What is a sonar? Its a device used to map the ocean floor.
What is Sea floor Spreading? A process that continually adds new material to the ocean floor.
What's the mid ocean ridge? It's a chain of underwater mountains.
What's subduction? Its the ocean floor sinking beneath the deep ocean trench and back into the mantle.
What is a Plate? A section of the lithosphere that slowly moves over the asthenosphere carrying pieces of continental and oceanic crust
What is a scientific theory? A well tested concept that explains a wide range of observations.
What is a Fault? A break in the Earth's crust where masses of rock slip past each other.
How does the process of sea floor spreading work? 1,Magma erupts.2,Magma cools, and pushes old rock aside.
What is a rift valley? Its a deep valley which forms when two plates move apart.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
