HAZARDZ FINAL

QuestionAnswer
What percent of the water is usable? 0.6%
Most of the earth's water is? Saline & Frozen
Saline Salt water of the ocean
Frozen Ice Caps and glaciers
Groundwater is the single largest reservoir of fresh water.
Recharge Replacement of ground water
Ground water mining If consumption of ground water exceeds recharge then ground water resources will diminish.
3 Ground Water Zones Vadose Zone, Saturated Zone, Water table.
Vadose Zone/ Unsaturated Zone Surface zone in which isolated volumes of water (pore water)are not interconnected.
Saturated Zone Subsurface zone in which all the pore surface (ground water)is filled with water.
Water table The upper surface of the saturated zone.
Aquifer A subsurface geologic material that yields significant qualities of water to wells and springs.
The best Aquifers are: Soils, Sand,Gravel, Bedrock if fractured
Aquitard A geologic material that may contain considerable quantities of water, but through which flow is slowed.
Best aquitards are clay, shale, bedrock if fractured
Ground water movement depends on Hydraulic gradient and Hydraulic Conductivity
Hydraulic Gradient Slope of the water table
Hydraulic conductivity Ability of a rock to transmit water.
Porosity Amount of empty space in a material
Permeability How interconnected the pours are.
Confined Aquifer An aquifer bounded on its upper and lower surfaces by an aquitard.
Artesian system Ground water in a confirmed aquifer that is under pressure and causes water to rise above the ground.
Potentiometric surface The height of an aquifer water when unconfirmed.
Unconfined aquifer An anquifer lacking an aquitard on it's upper surface; the water table forms under the surface.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
