Impact of genomics

QuestionAnswer
Biotechnology Is a branch of science that uses living organisms to manufacture food, drugs, or other products
How long has rudimentary biotechnology been around? For thousands of years
Selective breeding Breeding animals or plants based off of desirable traits.
What did Charles Darwin study? Natural selection
What did Gregor Mendel study? Genetics
What are the current biotechnology methods? Genetic modification, cloning, and DNA fingerprinting.
All genetic modification techniques involve... Inserting, deleting, or substituting DNA segments into an organism's natural genomic material.
Why are modifications made? To enhance the organism
What year did scientist begin mapping the human genome? 1980
When was this project complete? 2003
What was the hope involving with this project? That someday genetic manipulation in humans might be able to cure certain disorders
Gene therapy The process of replacing absent or faulty genes
How long was the Human Genome Project? 13 years
What were the scientists in the Human Genome Project attempting? The were attempting to identify all of the approximately 20,000 25,000 genes in human DNA and find the sequences in the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA
When did the scientists complete the Human Genome Project? 2003
What are some things that knowing about the human genome may help improve technology? Molecular medicine, microbial genomics, Bioarchaeology and anthropology, DNA forensics, and Agricultural genetic engineering
What is molecular medicine The diagnosis and treatment or different genetic diseases
What is DNA forensics? The use of DNA to help solve crimes, including the use of DNA fingerprint.
What is genetic engineering? The process of manipulating genes for practical purposes.
What does genetic engineering usually involve? The use of recombinant DNA.
What is recombinant DNA? It's DNA made from two or more different organisms
A group of scientist from Scotland used a somatic cell of an adult sheep to produce an identical copy of that sheep. What is this process known as? Cloning
What is the definition of cloning? The process through which a genetically identical cell or organism is produced
What is a likely possible negative impact of the use of genetically-engineered crops? 1)Genetically-engineered genes can be transferred to wild plants in the area or 2)Human DNA might experience recombinant mutations with the plant DNA 1)Genetically-engineered genes can be transferred to wild plants in the area

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
