Organic Molecules

What're the four main macromolecules of life? Carbohydrates, nucleic acids, lipids, and proteins
What are carbohydrates made up of? Carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms
Monosaccharides Simple carbohydrates
Polysaccharides Complex carbohydrates
What're nucleic acids formed from? Nucleotide monomers
Nucleotides? chemical compounds that are primarily comprised of the elements carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphate groups.
Two main types of nucleic acids RNA and DNA
What sugar does RNA contain? Ribose
What sugar does DNA contain? Deoxyribose
Five nitrogenous bases Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine, and Thymine
What's the most important lipid? Fats
Why are fats important? They're a major source of energy
Where is protein found? In hair, nails, feathers, hooves, and some animal shells
Proteins are made up of... ? Amino Acids
What're hormones? Protein-containing substances that play a role in the regulation of cellular functions.
Antibodies? Substances containing proteins that play a role in defense
What do enzymes do? Speed up chemical reactions
What does the active site do? It folds in the substrate's surface, like a key matches a lock
Name of the model for enzyme and substrate? Lock and Key
What does the shape determine? It's function
What's glucose? Blood sugar
What organic molecule would be found in a cell wall? Cellulose
Organic molecules contain at least..? Carbon and hydrogen
