QuestionAnswer
Carbohydrate an organic compound originally formed as the products of photosynthesis; carbohydrates are a major source of metabolic energy
Protein a chain of amino acids that is used for such activities as building cells and controlling chemical reactions
Amino Acids compounds containing carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen that serves as a building block of proteins
Lipid a waxy or oily compound, such as a fat, that is made of fatty acids an glycerol
Nucleic Acid a large, complex molecule made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus
Nucleotide a subunit of DNA or RNA consisting of a sugar, a phosphate, and a nitrogenous
Cell the basic unit of structure and function in all living things
Organelle a specialized structure that preforms a function within a eukaryotic cell
Nucleus a large structure inside a cell that contains the genetic material (DNA or RNA) and controls the cell's activities
Cell Membrane the thin, flexible barrier that surrounds the cell contents
Semipermeable a membrane that allows only certain substances to pass through
Cytoplasm the jellylike material inside the cell membrane but outside the nucleus
Ribosome a cell organelle on which proteins are assembled
Endoplasmic Reticulum a system of membranes in which parts of the cell membrane are assembled and some proteins are modified
Golgi Apparatus a stack of membranes in a cell that modifies and packages proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum
Mitochondria the organelles responsible for releasing energy from stored food molecules to power all cellular functions
Lysosome the cell organelle that contains enzymes needed to break down materials in the cell
Cell Wall a rigid structure outside of the cell membrane of all plant cells that is madde mostly of cellulose
Vacuole a cell organelle that stores materials, including water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates
Plastid an organelle in plant cells that contains pigments; chloroplasts are a type
Chloroplast the organelle found in plant cells and some othe organisms that captures energy from sunlight and converts it into chemical energy during photosynthesis
Eukaryote an organism whose cells contain a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles
Prokaryote a cell that does not contain a nucleus or membrane-bound organelles

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
