QuestionAnswer
1.cells. All living organisms on Earth are made up of microscopic structures.
2.Organelles are like the “organs” of a cell; they are groups of complex molecules that help cells survive
3.Cytoplasm is a suspension fluid that houses the other organelles
4.cell membrane acts as a boundary layer around the cytoplasm thus separating cells from their outside environments
5.cell wall a secretion of the cell membrane; it provides protection from physical injury, and with the vacuole, it provides structural support.
6.vacuole stores water and ingested food in a fluid sack
7.lysosomes contain enzymes specialized to break down ingested materials, secretions, and wastes
8.nucleus is like the “brain” of the cell
9.chromatin is composed of long, thin strands of DNA which contains “instructions” that control cell metabolism and heredity
10.Ribosomes are RNA and protein complexes that are found in all cells.
11.Mitochondria act like a stomach for the cell; they take in nutrients, break them down and create energy for the cell.
12.Chloroplasts are the food producers in a plant cell
13.endoplasmic reticulum transports chemicals between and within cells.
14.Plant cells and animal cells contain different cellular structures For example, plant cells possess a cell wall and chloroplasts
15.tissue. group of interconnected cells
16.organ a group of tissues that work together to perform a specific function.
17.Organ systems the fourth, and highest, level of organization
18.Cells are able to communicate with each other mainly through nerve impulses and hormones
19.Nerve impulses send signals from the central nervous system to the cells of the rest of the body
20.Hormones are released by endocrine glands and are carried by the bloodstream to target cells
21.Homeostasis the regulation of metabolic processes to maintain the stable internal conditions required for survival
22.Temperature Cells function properly only in a narrow range of temperatures
23.Membrane pumps are protein molecules embedded in the cell membrane that transport molecules across the cell membrane against the concentration gradient
24.Active Transport requires the input of energy (ATP) in order to move molecules from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration
25.Endocytosis is the process in which cells bring large molecules inside by surrounding them with the cell membrane and forming vesicles.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
