QuestionAnswer
What are catabolic pathways? Those that break down organic molecules for energy
What are anabolic pathways? Those that build up organic molecules to store energy for later use
Living organisms maintain a constant balance of two opposing sets of metabolic reactions called what? Catabolic and anabolic pathways
All living organisms some kind of what? Cellular Respiration
What is cellular respiration? A chemical pathway in which organic molecules are broken down to release energy in a quickly usable form (ATP)
What are the two categories cellular respiration can be divided into? Aerobic and anaerobic
What is aerobic respiration? Uses molecular oxygen as the final electron acceptor in the pathway
What is anaerobic respiration? Does not use oxygen while it performs respiration
What is the anaerobic respiration formula? C6H12O6 + 6O2 + 6H2O → 6CO2 + 12H2O + energy (ATP)
What is the formula for photosynthesis? CO2 + 12H2O + energy (light) → C6H12O6 + 6O2 + 6H2O
What are the 4 stages aerobic respiration can be divided into? Glycolysis, the formation of acetyl CoA, the citric acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation
What is glycolysis and where does it take place? Involves the conversion of glucose into 3 carbon molecule of pyruvate and it takes place in the cytosol of cells
The formation of acetyl CoA involves what? The conversion of each pyruvate acetyl CoA releasing one CO2
The citric acid cycle does what? Oxidizes the remaining carbon atoms of acetyl CoA to CO2
What is the electron transport chain? A series of membrane complexes that transfers energy-rich electrons from one complex to another in a chain
A pathway present in some prokaryotes is called what? Anaerobic respiration
What happens during fermentation? The reactions of glycolysis still occur making 2 ATPs
What happen during photosynthesis? Light energy is converted into an organic molecule form such as glucose
What are the two stages that photosynthetic pathway can be divided into? The light dependent reactions and the carbon fixation reactions
The light dependent reaction occurs where? Within the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplast
What is the carbon fixation reactions also called? The Calvin Cycle
Photorespiration reduces what? The efficiency of photosynthesis
Rubiso turn CO2 into what? Ribulose bisphosphate
Photophosphorylation Converts light into what? ATP and NADPH

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
