What is a carbohydrate? Carbohydrates are organic macromolecules that are made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms.
What are macromolecules? Are groups of molecules that are joined together
What is the definition of an organic molecule? Bonding occurs between two or more carbon atoms
What are monosacrides? Simple carbohydrates
What are polysacrides? Monosaccharides can be combined to form more complex carbohydrates
What are nucleic acids? Nucleic acids are formed from nucleotide monomers
What are nucleotides? are chemical compounds that are primarily comprised of the elements carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus
What are the 2 types od nucleotides? Deoxyribose nucleic acid and ribonuecleic acid
What are the functions of DNA? DNA stores genetic information and encodes the sequences of all the cell's proteins
What are the functions of RNA? RNA is involved in the direct production of the proteins.
What is the nitrogen base that is an A? Adenine
What is the nitrogen base that is an C? cytosine
What is the nitrogen base that is an G? guanine
What is the nitrogen base that is an T? Thymine
What is the nitrogen base that is an U? uracil
In RNA what does A pair up with? U (uracil)
In DNA what does A pair up with? T (thymine)
What pairs up with C in DNA? G
What are Lipids? Lipids are organic macromolecules that are insoluble in water
What are the MOST important lipids? Fat
Triglycerides contain what? one glycerol molecule and three fatty acids.
What are proteins? Proteins are organic macromolecules that are composed of amino acid monomers
What are hormones? are protein-containing substances that play a role in the regulation of cellular functions.
Aintibodies do what? They are the bodies defense against viruses
What do enzymes do? Speed up chemical reactions.
