Inheritance

QuestionAnswer
What are genes? Unique segments of DNA that produce specific functions
What are traits? genetic traits you get from your parents
What is genetics? the study of how these genetic traiots are inherited
what is genetic variation? differences in traits among individuals
what is genetic variation coused by? different alleles
what are allels? alternate forms of a particualr gene can be same or different copies
what is a genotype? the genetic makeup of an organism
what is a phenotype? visible traits
what is mendels rule of Inheritance rule of segregation
what is the rule of segregation? each allele present in a parent will be segregated away from the other during gamate formation, allowing one or the other allele to be inhetrited in an offspring but not both
what can traits be? dominant or recessive
when do you use a test cross? use when the genotype of a parent is not known
what is a test cross? crossed with an organism that is homozygous recessive for the trait
what is rule of independent assortment? when the gene loci under study are not genetically linked to one another
what is the mono hybrid cross? are performed to examine the genotypes
what is the Dihybrid cross? two traits are studyed at the same time
what is incomplete dominance? 1 allele is completely dominant over the other then a phenotype that is intermediate between the two allelic traits can be observed
what is codominance? alternate form of intermediate triats
what are multiple alleles? more than two different alleles present in varying amounts in a given population
what is polygenic inheritance? where more than one gene locus has a similar and additive effect on the same triat
what are human pedigrees? phenotypic family tree
what is a phenotypic family tree? past realtives phenotypic trsits
what is a pedigree? helps in the study of gene expression and hereidity in humans
what5 are sex linked traits? factor often becomes apparant in human pedigrees

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
