WordDefinition
Cell Cycle the life cycle of a cell
Interphase part of the cell cycle which consists of the period between two mitotic or meiotic divisions during which the cell grows, copies DNA, and synthesizes protein
mitosis in eukaryotic cells, a process of cell division that forms two new nuclei, each of which has the same number of chromosomes
centromere the region of chromosome that hold the two sister chromatids together during mitosis
cytokinesis the division of the cytoplasm of the cell
centrioles cell structures found in animal cells that hep initiate the development of the spindle for mitosis
spindle a network of microtubules which appears during mitosis; it helps guide the chromotids to the ends of the cell
chromosome in a eukaryotic cell, one of the structures in the nucleus that are made up of DNA and protein
haploid describes a cell, nucleus, or organism that has only one set of unpaired chromosomes (n)
diploid a cell that contains two haploid sets of chromosomes (2n)
gamere a haploid reproductive sex cell
gene a segment of DNA that is located in a chromosome and that codes for a specific hereditary trait
cancer a tumor in which the cells begin dividing at an uncontrolled rate and become invasive
meiosis a process in cell division during which the number of chromosomes decrease to half the original number by two divisions of the nucleus, which results in the production of sex cells
sexual reproduction reproduction in which gametes from two parents unite
homologous chromosome chromosomes that have the same sequence of genes, that have the same structure, and that pair during meiosis
crossing over the exchange of genetic material between homologous chromosomes during meiosis; can result in genetic recombination
asexual reproduction reproduction that does not involve the union of gametes and in which a single parent produces offspring that are genetically identical to the parent
chromatide one of the two strands of a chromosome that become visible during mitosis or meiosis

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
