QuestionAnswer
hypothesis ? a possible explanation for a set of observations or a possible answer to a scientific question
variable ? all factors that can change in an experiment
balance ? a tool used to measure the mass of objects
graduated cylinder ? a beaker marked in intervals that is used to measure volume
test tube ? a cylindrical tube, usually smaller than a beaker, that is open at one end and closed at the other
controlled expirement ? an experiment in which only one variable is changed at a time
independent variable ? also called manipulated variable
dependent variable ? also called responding variable
maniuplated variable ? variable that is purposely changed to test a hypothesis
responding variable ? factor that may change in response to the manipulated variable
What are the different ways to collect data ? •observing •measuring or counting •asking questions •performing an experiment
What does a table do ? allows info to be presented in a small space by organizing data efficently
What are the ste[s to scientific investigation ? - form hypothesis - test it -collect data -interperting data -communicating results
What is scientific method ? a systematic way to solve scientific questions
experimental group ? part of the procedure that has the treatment (the tested change)
quantitative observation ? making an observation using standards of measurement (numbers)
qualitative observation ? using the 5 senses to make observations
control group ? part of the procedure that has no treatment (not the tested change)
data table ? data is recorded into this, data is stored in this
procedure ? list of directions that tests the hypothesis
infrence ? using background knowledge to give clues what we observe in the world
conclusion ? ending result
scientific question ? a question which can be answered/tested using the scientific method
metric measurements ? are used in science - cm, m, mL, L, g, kg and degrees Celsius
