Cells
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What are cells? | All living organisms on Earth made up of microscopic structures |
| Cells consist of smaller pieces called what? | Organelles |
| What are organelles? | The organ of the cell; groups of complex molecules that help cells survive |
| What are examples of organelles? | Cell membrane, cell wall, cytoplasm, vacuole, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, nucleus and chloroplast |
| What is the cytoplasm? | A suspension fluid that house the other organelles |
| What is the cell membrane? | Acts as a boundary layer around the cytoplasm separating cells from the outside environment |
| What is the cell wall? | A secretion of the cell membrane; it provides protection from physical injury, and with the vacuole, it provides structural support |
| What does the vacuole do? | Stores water and ingested food in a fluid sack. It also removes waste from cells and produces turgor pressure against the cell wall for cellular support |
| What do lysosomes contain? | Enzymes specialized to break down ingested materials, secretions, and wastes. |
| What is the nucleus? | The brain of the cell it contains chromosomal information on the chromatin |
| What is the chromatin? | Composed of long thin strands of DNA which contains instructions that control cell metabolism and heredity |
| What are ribosomes? | RNA and protein complexes that are found in all cells |
| What is the mitochondria? | Act like a stomach for the cell they take in nutrients, break them down and create energy for the cell |
| What is the chloroplast? | The food producers in a plant cell |
| What is the endoplasmic reticulum? | Transports chemicals between and within cells |
| What is the lowest level of cell organization? | The cell |
| What is the second level of cell organization? | Tissues |
| What is the third level of cell organization? | Organs |
| Whats is the fourth and highest level of cell organization? | Organ systems |
| What are tissues? | Interconnected cells that can perform specialized functions |
| What are examples of tissues? | Muscle, nervous, and epithelial tissues |
| What is an organ? | A group of tissues that work together to perform a specific function |
| What are organ systems composed of? | Organs with interrelated functions |
| What do nerve impulses send? | Signals from the central nervous system to the cells of the rest of the body |
