---|---|
erosion | the process by which natural forces move weathered rock and soil from one place to another |
deposition | the process by which sediment settles out of water or wind that is carrying it, is deposited to a new location; it occurs where agents of erosion lay down sediment;changes the shape of the land |
sediment | material moved by erosion |
What causes erosion? | gravity, running water, glaciers, waves, and winds |
What's the difference between erosion and deposition? | Erosion wears down the Earth's surface and deposition builds it up |
What processes wear down and build up the Earth's surface? | erosion and deposition |
What causes mass movement? | gravity |
landslide | the most destructive kind of mass movement; occurs when rock and soil slide quickly down a steep slope; contain only a small amount of rock and soil; common where road builders have cut highways through hills or mountains. |
mudflows | the rapid downhill movement of a mixture of water, rock, and soil |
slump | a mass of rock and soil suddenly slips down a slope; the material moves down in one large mass |
creep | the very slow downhill movement of rock and soil; may have the eerie, out-of-kilter look of a fun house in an amusement park |
