Oceanography

Earth Science

QuestionAnswer
Oceans A Dynamic System where many physical and chemical changes are taking place, a source of fresh water and oxygen for all living things
Early Earth Had many more volcanoes. Volcanoes also give off water vapor along with carbon dioxide and other gases.
Major Oceans (listed in order of size and depth) The Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic
What's the difference between ocean and sea? A sea differs because it is part of an ocean that is surrounded by land on 3 sides
What is Earths surface covered mainly by? What percent? 71% water, 97% of water is ocean
What is ocean water made up of? mixture of gases and solids dissolved in pure water
Salinity the amount of dissolved salts in ocean water
What is the average salinity of the ocean? 35 parts per thousand
What is salinity measured in? parts per thousands
Where does salt come from? volcanic activity, erosion of the land, and wave erosion of beaches
Where does lower salinity occur? freshwater
Where does higher salinity occur? where there is greater evaporation and in polar regions where only fresh water freezes
What are the most abundant gases in the Ocean? Nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and oxygen
Where is the most gas found? near the surface where plant growth occurs
what temperature of water holds more gas? Cold water
Location of diff temps of air less dense warm water floats on top of the more dense cold water and they do not mix
Surface zone –Light Zone 100-300 meters deep, temperature fairly constant, waves and surface winds mix the water and transfer the heat downward
Thermocline Found directly under the surface zone, Temperature drops rapidly, Depth varies due to ocean currents
Deep Zone or Dark Zone Extremely cold water that extends from bottom of thermocline to the ocean floor, Temp, decreases only slightly and averages 4 degrees C, The zones do not occur in polar regions
