QuestionAnswer
All living organisms on Earth are made up of microscopic structures called... Cells
What organism is multicellular? Humans
Cells consist of smaller pieces called... Organelles
What do organelles do for the cell? They help the cell survive
What are some organelles? Cell membrane, cell wall, cytoplasm, mitochondrion, endoplasmic reticulum, nucleus and chloroplast
Cytoplasm A suspension fluid that houses the other organelles
Cell membrane Acts as a boundary layer around the cytoplasm
Cell wall A secretion of the cell membrane; provides protection from physical injury, and with vacuole, it provides structural support
Vacuole Stores water and ingested food in a fluid sack; removes waste from cells
Chromatin composed of long, thin strands of DNA which contains "instructions" that control cell metabolism and heredity
Ribosomes RNA and protein complexes that are found in all cells.
Mitochondria Acts like a stomach for the cell; takes in nutrients, breaks down and creates energy for the cell
Chloroplast are the food producers in a plant cell; are only found in plant cells
Plant cells and animal cells contain _________ cellular structures.
An organ is a Group of tissues that work together to perform a specific finction
Cells are able to communicate with each other through Nerve impulses and Hormones
Nerve impulses send signals from the... Central nervous system to the rest of the body
Homeostasis Is the regulation of metabolic processes to maintain the stable internal conditions required for survival
What are things that effect homeostasis? pH, internal temperature, and ion concentration
Cells function properly in a ______ range of temperatures Narrow
Cells rely on _________ to perform many essential tasks. Enzymes
Enzymes can function only in _______ range of temperatures and pHs Narrow
A cell's ___________ is key in maintaining homeostasis because the ___________ allows cells to regulate the materials that are entering or leaving. Membrane; membrane
Osmosis The movement of water molecules across the cell membrane.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
