Cricks Muscle Essay

Muscle Essay Vocab Flashcards

QuestionAnswer
Acetylcholine Neurotransmitter released by nerve endings. ACH stimulates receiving muscle cells to contract
Synaptic Cleft Gap between nerve ending and muscle cell. Filled with fluid, neurotransmitters diffuse across this gap
Receptors Sites on cells that receive neurotransmitters like ACH
Na+ Sodium, you may omit this from your essay
Action Potential In simple terms, this is a change in the polarity of a cell caused by stimulation. Calcium channels open as a result, allowing Ca to trigger muscle contraction
Sarcolemma membrane around a muscle cell, Ca must pass through this to get inside and activate a muscle fiber
T-tubule a channel that acts like a highway for action potential waves to travel across a muscle cell
Ca+2 Another way to say "calcium"
Troponin A protein found on muscle fibers
Actin A protein found on muscle fibers
Myosin Head A protein found on muscle fibers, when activated by ATP, this part of the fiber attaches to adjacent fibers
ATP energy used in the muscle cell, activates the myosin head
Crossbridge the name given to the structure of muscle strands when they are attached to each other by the myosin heads
Powerstroke contraction phase where the muscle shortens, another term for contraction
Acetylcholinesterase the chemical that dissolves leftover ACH in the synaptic cleft to make sure that it does not stimulate the muscle cell repeatedly
Sarcoplasmic reticulum you may skip this term in your essay
