Scientific Investiga

QuestionAnswer
Scientific Investigation Scientific method refers to a body of techniques for investigating phenomena, or acquiring new knowledge
How many basic steps does Scientific Investigations have? Five
Hypothesis A possible explanation for a set of observations or a possible answer to a scientific question
How should a hypothesis be phrased? As a statement
Variables All factors that can change in an experiment
Controlled Experiment An experiment in which only one variable is changed at a time
What are some tools used by scientist for their experiments to collect data? Balance, graduated cylinder, microscope, thermometer, etc.
What is a balance? A tool used to measure the mass of objects
What is a graduated cylinder? A beaker marked in intervals that is used to measure volume
What is a microscope? A tool used to produce magnified images of small objects
What is a thermometer? A tool used to measure temperature
What are the five basic steps of Scientific Investigations? 1.) Forming a hypothesis 2.) Test a hypothesis 3.) Data Collection 4.) Interpreting data 5.) Communication results
Manipulated Variable The variable that is purposely changed to test a hypothesis
Independent Variables Manipulated variables are also called this
Responding Variable (dependent variable) The factor that may change in response to the manipulated variable
Constant (controlled) Variable All of the other variables or factors, besides the manipulated variable
Tools that scientist use to organize and present information Tables and Graphs
Circle graphs are best used to show... How a whole is divided into parts (percentages of a whole)
Bar graphs are best used for... Counting and to show how a number of objects or events compare in relationship to a single property.
Line graphs are best used to show... a relationship between two measured quantities, usually as a trend over time.
Collecting data can be done in many different ways, such as: 1.) Observing 2.) measuring or counting 3.) asking questions 4.) performing an experiment
Tables allow what? A lot of information to be presented in a small space by organizing data efficiently
Graphs are used to ... Present information visually
Whenever a Scientist collects data that is unusual in an experiment he or she should... Carefully go over the investigation's design to make sure that there is only one manipulated variable in the experiment

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
